Update from the Board of Trustees

The Polaris Board of Trustees is very pleased to announce that  Angela Olesen Seggie  has joined the Board of Trustees as our newest parent representative.  Angela comes to us with many years of experience in marketing and sales, which will enhance the capabilities of the current Board as we work toward our outreach and fundraising goals for 2017-2018.
The other two parent representatives who are currently serving on the Board of Trustees are Sharon Klardie  and Elizabeth Velez.  Our four current community representatives, who hold a majority of the Board membership, (as stipulated in our Charter,) are Jill Cane, Camila Miranda, Jeff Tatro and Don Winterton.  Biographies and photo  of all seven Trustees will soon be updated on the Polaris Charter School website.

Members of the public are always welcome to attend the Board of Trustees meetings.  Time is reserved at the beginning of each meeting for anyone wishing to make a public comment.  The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be Monday, March 12th, starting at 6 PM.

Primary Class Field Trip

The Primary Class visited the SEE Science Center on Thursday. This was a great learning experience that tied into their study of Simple Machines and “How Things Work”. Students got to experience a Van-de-Graaff, Harmonograph and a Moonwalk. Students also participated in a LEGO team build!

Intermediate Field Trip

Mrs. Apac and Mr. Bailey’s classes visited the Manchester Millyard Museum Friday. The students learned about the industrial revolution in New Hampshire. Some of the topics covered were hydro power, steam engines and what life was like for children during the industrial revolution. We completed a fun scavenger hunt activity where each group became experts in one area of the museum and presented what they learned to the whole group. We also learned about inventors, including “Lady Edison”, Margaret Knight. She started inventing when she was only 12 years old and received 27 patents in her lifetime. Her inventions include shoe-manufacturing machines, a “dress shield” to protect garments from perspiration, a rotary engine as well as an internal combustion engine.

Star Student

Our Star Students recognized on February 19 were: McKensey, Gwenan, Yousif, Oliver, Camilla, Alexandria and Jonas.

100th Day of School Celebration

Primary Students celebrated the 100th Day of School this week. Students were challenged to build structures using 100 marshmallows, made necklaces and showed how to count 100 several different ways.

PEF News

Over just a few years, the PEF annual auction fundraiser has evolved from a small breakfast with a few items to a large scale event expected to raise more than $10,000 this year for Polaris.

This year the fundraising event will evolve yet again. In lieu of the auction fundraiser, we will be hosting a Gala to raise additional monies for Polaris. We expect the 2018 Gala will attract local businesses and philanthropists leading to a wider net of donors.

We are privileged this year to have some very influential and experienced Gala chairs working hard to coordinate this event in ways that will maximize the overall financial benefit to Polaris and our children.

This year’s gala will have no auction component. It will be a fun, adult only gala event with a more upscale menu.

Thank you in advance for understanding this new concept to widen the support for Polaris Charter School, as we aim to fulfill the Polaris Educational Foundation mission for 2018.

The event will be held March 24, 2018 at LaBelle Winery in Amherst, NH.

Information on ticket sales will be posted to the PEF Facebook page and Polaris Newsletter in the near future. Mark your calendars!

 March 4-9!

MORE FUN ACTIVITIES AND PRIZES TO BE ANNOUNCED…Lets brighten the gloomy weather with warm, school spirit

School Spirit Wear is a great way to show your Polaris Pride. This year we have chosen a supplier that offers more colors, more logo options, more styles and more item including bags, hats, coats, pants and coffee mugs.

Spirit Wear can be ordered any time—there is no order deadline but it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive so ORDER NOW. A portion of your purchase will go to Polaris. There is no requirement to order Polaris Spirit Wear but it a fun way to show school pride and makes participating in school spirit days more fun. Choose a shirt, sweatshirt, hat or anything you can think of!

Ordering is simple:

Log on to: https://ssastores.com/polarischarterschool

You can order via smartphone or tablet but the app works best on a real computer.

Choose the item you want and then choose one of a dozen Polaris designs from the right. Please note that one Polaris Logo has a white background for darker colors. Choose the one that looks best on your preview screen. When you click on the design it will preview on your shirt. Choose the color and size you wish to order and quantity. Verify on the left that the preview item is what you want it to look like and then add it to your cart.

Custom Labels: To choose designs that can be unique to your family member or as a teacher gift choose the blue box above the designs that says Get More Designs. Choose the design that fits best such as Grandma, Pops, Aunt, Dad, Mom, Godmother, Sister, Brother (and many more). After you choose this title a series of design options will appear. Pick the design you like and it will be available to preview on your item to the left.

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE: The dance will be held April 7, 2108 NOT April 8, 2018

The family dance event that earned the award by PTO Today as best family event of the year will return and move to Founder’s Academy for more fun! The event will be April 7th.

We will be moving some of the fun items that were once part of the auction part of the gala to this event. If you have any items, gift baskets or can get gift certificates from your business we welcome your donations!

WE ARE IN NEED OF A FREE DJ-and we know there is a parent that volunteered but have not been able to find them, can you help?

We also need a strong committee to keep the best event all year going. Please e-mail pef@polarischarterschool.org to get started.

If you could run an event such as a robotics tournament, ninja challenge, hoops tournament or something that will be appealing to our non-dancers please let us know!

The overwhelming majority of those who run the PEF as board member will be completing their final year this year. This organization needs several new parents to step up and get ready to take on the challenges of next year and get some training on how things run before the current members leave their posts (and in many cases the school). Please take the time to consider how you can contribute.

In addition to current board positions, we recognize a chair to start a robotics program and take over Student Ambassadors.

A sledding party, a student choice event, the annual readathon and much more are in progress! Stay tuned…

Best Wishes,

Jayme Putnam, Miles Martin
