Update from the Board of Trustees

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Monday, February 19th, at 6 pm in the basement office of Polaris Charter School.  As always, our meetings are open to the public and we welcome your suggestions and questions during the public comment section at the beginning of our meeting.
The agenda for this meeting will include our regular monthly reports on finances, the PEF activities, and an update from our Director, Jen Murdock-Smith.  In addition, we will have updates on the Gala being planned for March 24th at LaBelle Winery and on our 2018 Outreach goal to increase Board membership to nine representatives.  The final agenda will be posted at school a week prior to the meeting.

Core Value – Fairness

We read the book the “The Little Red Hen” by Paul Galdone.  The little red hen lived with at cat, dog and mouse in a cozy house.  While the hen did all of the house work, the rest napped all day. One day, the little red hen found some grains of wheat which she planted and tended to. When she asked for help, the cat, dog and mouse all replied “not I.” Eventually, the wheat was harvested and ground into flour which the hen used to make a delicious cake. As soon as the cat, dog and mouse smelled it baking, they woke from their naps expecting it to be shared with them. However, since the little red hen had done all of the work, she ate the cake all by herself.

We related to this to our work in the classroom on projects. It’s not fair if one person does most of the work while others sit back. It is important for everyone to share the responsibility and the rewards.

Star Student

Our Star Students recognized on February 12 were: Daisy, Lucas, Christian, Molly, Madelyn, Mason and Bella.

Congratulations!

Pegasus Class Share

The Pegasus classroom celebrated Valentine’s Day this week by writing compliments for each other with an activity called “I give a rose”. We talked about recognizing the good in people, even if that person isn’t our best friend. We tied this activity in with our core value of fairness by assigning each student a different classmate to write a compliment for. Some students stepped up and made a second compliment for those who were absent the day of our activity to ensure that no one felt left out!

ANNUAL GALA UPDATE

Over just a few years, the PEF annual auction fundraiser has evolved from a small breakfast with a few items to a large scale event expected to raise more than $10,000 this year for Polaris.

This year the fundraising event will evolve yet again. In lieu of the auction fundraiser, we will be hosting a Gala to raise additional monies for Polaris. We expect the 2018 Gala will attract local businesses and philanthropists leading to a wider net of donors.

We are privileged this year to have some very influential and experienced Gala chairs working hard to coordinate this event in ways that will maximize the overall financial benefit to Polaris and our children.

This year’s gala will have no auction component. It will be a fun, adult only gala event with a more upscale menu.

Thank you in advance for understanding this new concept to widen the support for Polaris Charter School, as we aim to fulfill the Polaris Educational Foundation mission for 2018.

The event will be held March 24, 2018 at LaBelle Winery in Amherst, NH.

Information on ticket sales will be posted to the PEF Facebook page and Polaris Newsletter in the near future. Mark your calendars!

Pick the design you like and it will be available to preview on your item to the left.

AWARD WINNING NORTH STAR DANCE

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE: The dance will be held April 7, 2108 NOT April 8, 2018

The family dance event that earned the award by PTO Today as best family event of the year will return and move to Founder’s Academy for more fun! The event will be April 7th.

We will be moving some of the fun items that were once part of the auction part of the gala to this event. If you have any items, gift baskets or can get gift certificates from your business we welcome your donations!

WE ARE IN NEED OF A FREE DJ-and we know there is a parent that volunteered but have not been able to find them, can you help?

We also need a strong committee to keep the best event all year going. Please e-mail pef@polarischarterschool.org to get started.

If you could run an event such as a robotics tournament, ninja challenge, hoops tournament or something that will be appealing to our non-dancers please let us know!

MAJOR CHANGES FOR THE PEF NEXT YEAR

The overwhelming majority of those who run the PEF as board member will be completing their final year this year. This organization needs several new parents to step up and get ready to take on the challenges of next year and get some training on how things run before the current members leave their posts (and in many cases the school). Please take the time to consider how you can contribute.

In addition to current board positions, we recognize a chair to start a robotics program and take over Student Ambassadors.

MORE TO COME!

A sledding party, a student choice event, the annual readathon and much more are in progress! Stay tuned…

Best Wishes,

Jayme Putnam, Miles Martin
