Update from the Board of Trustees

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees is scheduled for Monday, February 19th, at 6 pm in the basement office of Polaris Charter School.  As always, our meetings are open to the public and we welcome your suggestions and questions during the public comment section at the beginning of our meeting.
The agenda for this meeting will include our regular monthly reports on finances, the PEF activities, and an update from our Director, Jen Murdock-Smith.  In addition, we will have updates on the Gala being planned for March 24th at LaBelle Winery and on our 2018 Outreach goal to increase Board membership to nine representatives.  The final agenda will be posted at school a week prior to the meeting.

Late Arrival Policy

We provide a full twenty minute arrival period to allow for unpredictable traffic conditions and to
ensure that your child is able to settle before Morning Gathering starts.
Because of the importance of this Gathering time, we ask that parents attempt to limit late arrivals to
unavoidable circumstances. If you cannot avoid a late arrival, please contact the school office before
8:20 a.m. to notify us that your child will be late.
Email attendance@polarischarterschool.org. Messages should include the student’s name,
parent’s name, and the reason for the absence.
Call the attendance line (634-0034) AND submit a written verification of the reason for the
tardiness to the school office upon the student’s arrival.
If you arrive after 8:20, please accompany your child into the school building and sign them in on the
Student Attendance Log on the main floor. They will be marked tardy. The tardiness will be
considered unexcused unless one of the designated exceptions applies or there was an unavoidable
travel delay

Core Value – Fairness

February is Fairness month! We first talked about what it means. To help illustrate this, we viewed the following cartoon:

Students were able to really grasp that everyone getting the same thing is not necessarily fair.

Star Student

Our Star Students recognized on February 5 were: Matthew, Kamden, Mikail, Tricia, Jolie, Nicholas and Kaelan

Vela Class Share

The Vela Class shared recent projects they have been working on.  Students have been learning about Simple Machines and made marble ramps on the walls to control which direction their marbles traveled.  They also recently did a writing/art project based on the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and wrote snowmen poems.

Primary Class Visit

Primary had ANOTHER parent visit this week!!  Mr. Whitney came in on Friday, and taught us all about Polarized Light!!  He first taught us about what an engineer is and what they do.  Then he told us all about Polarized Light and what that is!  Mr. Whitney explained what a polarizer is, and had enough for each student to try using two polarizers to look at the light!  We learned that when you have one polarizer, the light still comes through, but when you add a second one and turn it, the light is blocked.  We also learned that if you add a third polarizer to the MIDDLE, diagonally, the light was no longer blocked!  We then got to create Polarized Light Art!  Thank you for the AMAZING visit Mr. Whitney!  I know the kids won’t soon forget this visit!!

PEF News

Over just a few years, the PEF annual auction fundraiser has evolved from a small breakfast with a few items to a large scale event expected to raise more than $10,000 this year for Polaris.

This year the fundraising event will evolve yet again. In lieu of the auction fundraiser, we will be hosting a Gala to raise additional monies for Polaris. We expect the 2018 Gala will attract local businesses and philanthropists leading to a wider net of donors.

We are privileged this year to have some very influential and experienced Gala chairs working hard to coordinate this event in ways that will maximize the overall financial benefit to Polaris and our children.

This year’s gala will have no auction component. It will be a fun, adult only gala event with a more upscale menu.

Thank you in advance for understanding this new concept to widen the support for Polaris Charter School, as we aim to fulfill the Polaris Educational Foundation mission for 2018.

The event will be held March 24, 2018 at LaBelle Winery in Amherst, NH.

Information on ticket sales will be posted to the PEF Facebook page and Polaris Newsletter in the near future. Mark your calendars!

 March 4-9!

MORE FUN ACTIVITIES AND PRIZES TO BE ANNOUNCED…Lets brighten the gloomy weather with warm, school spirit

School Spirit Wear is a great way to show your Polaris Pride. This year we have chosen a supplier that offers more colors, more logo options, more styles and more item including bags, hats, coats, pants and coffee mugs.

Spirit Wear can be ordered any time—there is no order deadline but it takes 2-3 weeks to arrive so ORDER NOW. A portion of your purchase will go to Polaris. There is no requirement to order Polaris Spirit Wear but it a fun way to show school pride and makes participating in school spirit days more fun. Choose a shirt, sweatshirt, hat or anything you can think of!

Ordering is simple:

Log on to: https://ssastores.com/polarischarterschool

You can order via smartphone or tablet but the app works best on a real computer.

Choose the item you want and then choose one of a dozen Polaris designs from the right. Please note that one Polaris Logo has a white background for darker colors. Choose the one that looks best on your preview screen. When you click on the design it will preview on your shirt. Choose the color and size you wish to order and quantity. Verify on the left that the preview item is what you want it to look like and then add it to your cart.

Custom Labels: To choose designs that can be unique to your family member or as a teacher gift choose the blue box above the designs that says Get More Designs. Choose the design that fits best such as Grandma, Pops, Aunt, Dad, Mom, Godmother, Sister, Brother (and many more). After you choose this title a series of design options will appear. Pick the design you like and it will be available to preview on your item to the left.

The family dance event that earned the award by PTO Today as best family event of the year will return and move to Founder’s Academy for more fun! The event will be April 8th.

We will be moving some of the fun items that were once part of the auction part of the gala to this event. If you have any items, gift baskets or can get gift certificates from your business we welcome your donations!

WE ARE IN NEED OF A FREE DJ-and we know there is a parent that volunteered but have not been able to find them, can you help?

We also need a strong committee to keep the best event all year going. Please e-mail pef@polarischarterschool.org to get started.

If you could run an event such as a robotics tournament, ninja challenge, hoops tournament or something that will be appealing to our non-dancers please let us know!

The overwhelming majority of those who run the PEF as board member will be completing their final year this year. This organization needs several new parents to step up and get ready to take on the challenges of next year and get some training on how things run before the current members leave their posts (and in many cases the school). Please take the time to consider how you can contribute.

In addition to current board positions, we recognize a chair to start a robotics program and take over Student Ambassadors.

A sledding party, a student choice event, the annual readathon and much more are in progress! Stay tuned…

Best Wishes,

Jayme Putnam, Miles Martin
