Happy Holidays!

December 26th – January 2nd – No School

Ice Melt

Our playground resembles an ice skating rink currently and we have had to have indoor recess out of safety concerns. We could really use donations of salt to make it usable again.

Core Value – Caring

Sharing Is Caring

To show you care for someone is to lend a helping hand
A need to be concerned for every woman, child and man
Share whatever you can to help someone in need
Then you will be happier and a better person indeed
When you share with others you unselfishly give of yourself
Then love is given freely instead of sitting on a shelf
Hands that are always clenched nothing can ever get out
Ones that are open and gives is what love is all about
Sharing is caring when given from the heart with pleasure
The good returns are many and the rewards are without measure
Goods given freely brings a smile to the needy person
Holding back when you can give will only continue to worsen

I delivered a van full of goods and holiday cheer for the family we helped out this year. Thank you to everyone who donated items. As you can see, I had lots of helpers for wrapping the presents!

Star Students

Since we had only three days of school last week, we did not do star students this week.

Dorado Class Share

This week, Mrs. Dahlberg taught the Dorado class the song “This Little Light of Mine” and they made motions to go with the words which they showed us on Friday. Afterward, we all joined them in singing and we now have a new song added to our list of choices to sing at Morning Gathering. The students also shared pictures they drew that showed them doing something that they could show they care.

Dolma

Thank you Hikmat family for treating Mrs. Rainey’s class to the Iraqi dish called Dolma. It was grape leaves and onions stuffed with rice, ground beef and spices. It was delicious and the students were very eager and willing to try it! We also learned that in Iraq, their weekend is Friday and Saturday and families gather to eat this dish on Friday.

Ms. Gilbert’s class and Ms. Haynes class decorated picture frames for the pictures we took during book character dress up day this week.

PEF News

All parents are invited to our next PEF Meeting on Monday, Jan 12th at 7pm at the school.  We have many exciting things going on and are eager to have parent input.

Pizza Ordering– When we return to school after the break it will be the beginning of a new month. If you wish to place a monthly order for January, you will need to place it that 1st week by Wednesday, January 4th.  Please use the order forms.   If for some reason you are not able to use the form, it is very important that you include your child’s NAME, CLASS, and # of pizza slices and if the pizza is Gluten Free (GF) with the money that you turn in.  Otherwise, your order may not be placed correctly and your child is likely to be disappointed. Thank you!

After School Enrichments

We are actively looking for parent volunteers to run enrichment courses in the Winter/Spring Semester. If you have a skill you’d like to share with the students at Polaris please email us at pefenrichment@gmail.com. Some ideas that have been suggested in the past are sewing, astronomy, and computer programming, but all ideas are welcome!  Another consideration the PEF is looking in to is an offsite climbing option at Vertical Dreams in Manchester.  We are looking into two options. One would be on a Wednesday which would require multiple parent volunteers and the other option would be on a Friday.   Both options require parents to transport or arrange transport for children from Polaris to the gym. The price for the two options are as follows: Wednesday-  6-8 week, $15 a session and Friday- 6-8 week, $25 a session (unless parents wanted to commit to a 12 week session which would bring the price down to $19 a session) .

If you are interested in the Wednesday option and/or are willing to be a parent volunteer as a (Vertical Dreams would provide training for the role), please let us know as we evaluate these options over the break.

PEF Auction– The PEF Auction Planning Committee will be having a meeting at the Bedford Panera on Tuesday, January 5th at 7pm.  The Committee could use parent volunteers as well as parental input as this event is planned.  Please attend if you are able.

Polaris Game Day– The PEF is excited to announce a Game Day! This fun event will be held on January 14, 2017 at 10am.

Below, you can find some important dates for your School Calendar:

  • PEF Meeting– January 12th -7pm at Polaris
  • PEF Auction Committee Meeting– January 5th– 7pm at Panera in Bedford
  • Game Day January 14th at 10am
  • Polaris Auction!!! – March 11th

2017-2018 Admissions

It is hard to believe but Re-Enrollment/Enrollment for the next school year will begin in January. More information will be coming.

Special Visitor

Kevin Skarupa from WMUR visited Polaris yesterday. Ms. Perham’s and Ms. V’s class recently completed some weather studies, even making their own instruments. Mr. Skarupa gave a presentation and then answered questions. He also briefly visited all of our other classrooms. We learned a little secret: if he wears a blue tie with white snowflakes during his broadcast, he is pretty sure that we are going to have a snow day so keep a look out 🙂 http://www.wmur.com/article/visit-polaris-charter-school/8503073

Founders Visit

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to tour The Founders Academy. It also gave me an opportunity to see several of our former students!

Founders is an open enrollment chartered public school for grades 6-12 in Manchester, NH. If you are interested in learning more, they are having an Admissions Information Night for prospective families on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 6:00 p.m.   The evening’s program includes brief presentations on the school’s mission, rigorous and challenging curriculum, and admissions process.   The evening concludes with a self-guided tour of the school and opportunities to talk individually with teachers and administrators.  For more information you can visit: thefoundersacademy.org/admissions

Pavo Class Share

Ms. V’s class performed several choreographed dances at last week’s Learning Celebration and the kids performed their “dance off” for us on Friday.

They also have been reading the book series “Teddy Mars” by Molly B. Burham. In the first book, he set out to break a world record. They then learned about Saint-Bernard school in Drummondville, Quebec where 1500 students from kindergarten to high school plus all of the staff got together and broke the world record for most people performing the ‘Cups” song “When I’m Gone” by Anna Kendrick at the same time. Pavo class learned the routine and performed that as well.

Polaris students made thank you cards for Kevin Sheppard, Manchester Directory of Public Works for his assistance with getting our playground bollards and he emailed expressing his appreciation:

Good Morning Elizabeth,

Yesterday, I received a magnificent Thank You card from the students of your school!

I did take a ride by and the bollards look great. I understand the process was time consuming, but am glad the playground is safer for the students.

The card means a lot to me and it is truly one of the best thank you’s I have ever received as the Director!

I hope you have a great Holiday Season.

From the Board of Trustees

Thank you to all who helped with the Board’s first participation in the International #GivingTuesday campaign.  With over 30 separate donations and matching individual  and corporate funds, we raised $5,710. This is a great start to our annual fundraising campaign to support Polaris Charter School.  Please continue to spread the word and invite family and friends to make an end-of-year, tax deductible contribution, if they haven’t done so already.  Donations can be made through PayPal on the school’s webpage.

The next Board meeting is Tuesday, December 20th, at 6PM.  Members of the public are always welcome. Public comments are invited at the beginning of the meeting.

Core Value – Citizenship

We wrapped up our discussion of Citizenship this week. We also took some time to review the school wide rules that we created at the beginning of the year. Our Core Value for December is Caring.
