  Happy Winter Break!

Core Value – Respect

This week, we read an update on Kid President. As you know, he has a disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) which results in frequent broken bones. This week he had surgery to replace a rod in his leg. The students love watching his inspirational videos that contain such wonderful messages. It was a reminder that you never know what someone you know is going through and why it is important to treat each other with respect and kindness.

To correspond with this message, we listened to/watched a video called “Take a Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes.” It talked about looking at situations from another person’s perspective. You can view it here.

Star Students

Last week’s students who really exemplified Respect were: Emmy, Giuli, Izzy, Jordan, Ryan and Sarah. Super job!

Pavo Class Share

The Pavo class has been learning about the American Revolution. Each student has been researching a person significant to that time period (such as George Washington and Betsy Ross) and they shared a little about them with us last Friday. They also taught us the song “My Country Tis of Thee,” first explaining what each verse means.

Students in Mrs. Dudley’s and Mrs. V’s class buddied together to make catapults recently. They used tape and popsicle sticks to build them and then they measured the distance that the hershey kisses traveled.

  • There is no school February 22nd through February 28th

  Thank You

We received a thank you note on behalf of the families that we purchased gifts and household times for the holidays. Everyone’s contributions made a significant difference for two families.

Core Value – Respect

We cannot talk about Respect without listening to Aretha Franklin singing all about it! Later in the week we had a very serious conversation about respecting our computers. We have run into several issues lately. We have caught some students searching for information unrelated to the work they should have been doing. Many settings have been changed and some of our Chrome Books were even Power Washed (restored to factory settings). Staff is going to be keeping a close eye on this.

Star Students

This week’s Respectful Star Students were: Andrea, Dominik, Finn, Mohammed, Nathan, Ryenn and Torrey. Nice job!

Perseus Class Share

Ms. Perham’s class shared their Peace Poems with us on Monday. They used similes to describe what peace looks like, sounds like, tastes like, feels like and smells like. Here is some of their work:

North Star Dance

The North Star Dance is going to be April 2nd, so save the date! This dance is for students to invite someone who is their “North Star,” someone who is important to them, or is a big influence in their lives. Last year’s dance was a big hit, so we hope to see you there!

  Enrollment Reminders

If you are enrolling siblings of a current student, you must complete an application for each one. The deadline for the paper application is February 12, 2016.

Core Value – Respect

Its hard to believe that it is already February! The Core Value we will be focusing on this month is Respect. We began visualizing what we think of and how we show it to start.

Oliver shared that, for him,Respect means: R – Respond, E – Example, S – Speak, P – Propertyy, E- Earn, C- Care, T- Try. It was such a wonderful message that I asked him to write it down. IMG_6730
We then brainstormed different places and people that we show respect to. The students had so many ideas to contribute that it took us two days to finish!IMG_6749

Star Students

This week’s Star Students that were recognized for showing acceptance were: Allie, Madison, Matthew, Maya, Toby and Tristan. Great job!

Perseus Class Share

Due to the snow day on Friday, this will be included in next week’s newsletter.

Special Poster

Colton was working on a challenging math pre-assessment with some other students and they were having difficulty. Suddenly, he shared many of his thoughts with his teacher and classmates. Ms. Gilbert expressed how she wished she could put everything he just said on a poster to hang in their classroom. Colton asked “should I write it down for you?” He spent the next day working on a shortened version of his thoughts during recess. “Though it is fun to know. It’s much more fun to learn.”

In Ms. Gilbert’s words: “As a teacher, you hope all of our kids have a passion to learn and a positive mindset. Even if they don’t enter school with that passion/mindset you hope there’s something you can do to change that along the way.” She is so grateful to have his poster to always remind her of the love of learning.

  • The next Information Sessions is:

    o   Saturday, February 6th at 1pm

  •  Don’t forget to send in pizza money before noon on Thursdays.
  • Check our lost and found – we have many coats, gloves, sweatshirts, etc. Please do your best to label your children’s outerwear and lunch boxes.

PEF News

We are looking for a volunteer (or volunteers) to continue the electronic cataloguing of our library.  The wonderful parent that has been keeping track is leaving next year, and we are hoping to train someone to take it over, preferably long-term.   Contact Daniela at danielareyes@comcast.net

PEF Committees

We are actively looking for a Co-Chair for the Events committee and a Chair for the Enrichment committee. All parents/guardians are automatically members of the PEF and are free to join any of the committees of the PEF: Events, Volunteering, Fundraising, and Enrichment.  You do not have to be a committee chair to help out, but just providing support would be a great help.  If you are interested, please contact me at danielareyes@comcast.net or any of the committee chairs to find out more information.

Please only send in orders/payments for pizza weekly or monthly. Our great pizza program is run by several parents who volunteer here at Polaris. It takes a lot of time and effort to organize those pizza orders, and the volunteer who organizes the orders is only set up to receive orders monthly or weekly.

Also, we will no longer be offering water for pizza orders, effective after this week.

PEF Meetings

The PEF meeting schedule for the rest of the school year are; Feb 19,  Mar 17, Apr 22 andMay 19. They are always at 7pm at school (alternating Thursday and Friday).
