The Week Ending 11/07/14

Polaris Star

After Care

We have two promising options for having after care AT Polaris once New Morning is finished.  Liz Putnam is working out the final details and information will hopefully be available next week.

  • There will be no After-school care on Wednesday, Nov 26th due to the Thanksgiving holiday

  • There is no school next Tuesday, November 11 in honor of Veteran’s Day
  • Has been revised and updated.  You can find it here.

Core Value – Citizenship

What does citizenship mean?  That is what we began discussing on Tuesday.  We talked about how as citizens, we have certain rights and responsibilities and one of them is voting. We also defined what citizenship is.  In encompasses many different qualities but it boils down to the right to have rights. On Wednesday we talked about the process of becoming a citizen. One way is to apply for Naturalization. These individuals also need to take a test and we reviewed some of the questions on the test. On Thursday we listed to the song “They’re Coming to America” by Neil Diamond.

Mrs. Rainey’s Class Share Day

Joseph, Juju, Skylar and Charlotte shared their friendship venn diagrams. Students partnered up and discussed their similarities and differences, which were shown in the venn digram.

Tia, Haya and Alyssa shared a graph that went along with our Who Am I Unit. Students developed questions to interview their family to learn more about their families history. They all found out the countries that their ancestors came from and created a graph to display the data that was collected.

In Science, we have been learning a lot about matter. Students learned about solids, liquids and gasses and the identifying characteristics of each. They had to choose a solid, liquid or gas and an example of one of these to create a wanted poster. Hafsa, Liam and Courtney chose to share these this week.

What Comes Next?

Many parents have asked us about options for their child when it is time to move on from Polaris.  Mrs. Putnam has compiled a list of possible options following 5th or 6th grade.  You can click here to view it.

Star Students

Our star students who showed what great friends they were last week are: Bea, Corey, Giuli, Juju, Julian, Myleigh, and Xavier.  Nice job!

Voting in Mrs. Dudley’s Class

On Tuesday, Mrs. Dudley’s class held their own elections.  They voted on their favorite ice cream flavor, whether they thought Mrs. Dudley would have a boy or a girl, their favorite pet and which state they thought was the best.  They were also able to “write in” an answer just as can be done in political elections.

Chinese Language Paradise

Dear Parents,

This week, the students learned a few fall words and got to write Chinese characters on maple leafs.  Please encourage them to keep practicing all the words that they have been learning.  I am collecting fortune cookie slips and want to use them in class when I have a collection of them.  Please feel free to send them in with your students whenever you can.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Wong

NO WINTER SHOW CHOIR practice on Mon., Nov. 10th.  Miss Jen of Sunshine Generation had her tonsils removed yesterday! We will schedule an extra rehearsal closer to show time.  Please send her your well wishes.  Thank you.

Violin Update:

We have been in touch with several independent violin teachers. We are actively looking for someone to contract with to provide the lessons at Polaris during the times originally scheduled ~ Thursdays between 3:00 and 4:00. We did find one teacher available on Mondays at that time, but we realize there is some conflict for students who are already in Show Choir. We will update you as we have new information. Thank you for your patience.  We know the children are eager!

Note for students and parent volunteers:

Please remember that using the school classrooms for Enrichment activities is a privilege.  We must leave each room better than we found it when our activity is complete.  Each Enrichment group meeting must use a separate trash bag than the one in the trash can in the room you are meeting in.  Trash collected during the Enrichment activity must be taken out to the dumpster after the activity has finished and the room has been cleaned. Thank you!
