The Week Ending 10/03/14

Polaris Star

Please Help!

We need snacks! A day does not go by where a child is missing a lunch or snack or just needs something a little extra.  We would appreciate donations of items such as pretzels, popcorn, crackers, dried fruit/fruit cups, granola or cereal bars.

Core Value – Friendship

This week we transitioned from our Core Value of Community to Friendship.  On Tuesday we discussed our handprint rainbow.  Students recognized that it symbolized that they are a part of their own classroom community as well as the Polaris school community. On Wednesday, students brainstormed “what is a friend?” We had fun listening to the song You’ve Got a Friend in Me from the movie Toy Story on Thursday.  Some of the kids even knew the words and sang along!  You can play it here.

Miss Browns’s Class Shines Bright

Students in Miss Brown’s class learned the song Lean on Me in recognition of our Core Value of Friendship.  Students were also taught some sign language which they used while performing the song.

 Art Class News

Vincent Van Gogh painted hundreds of self-portraits. Often he expressed his feelings through them. This week students made their own self-portraits using pencil, chalk or oil pastel sticks as their mediums.

Mrs. Rose

Mandarin Chinese Corner

Dear Parents,

This week we finished up our intermediate family theme.  Please encourage your child/children to practice those words at home with you when they can.  For example, instead of calling you Dad or Mom, have them call you in Mandarin Chinese.

We also used the family photos you sent in to do a project and they will be displayed throughout the classroom for a while.

Please have each of your kids bring in two new folders with pockets inside to Chinese Class next week.

Thank you!

Ms. Wong

 DNA Experiment

This week, students in Mrs. Post’s class extracted their own DNA from their spit by adding pineapple juice, rubbing alcohol, and soap.  The students we able to wrap the DNA around a stick and pull it out of the solution to examine it.  Then the kids made models of the twisted double helix using twizzlers and gumdrops.
