Beginning on October 7th, 2013 Polaris students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in The New England Common Assessment Program – NECAP. The fall NECAP tests in reading, mathematics, and writing (5th grade only) were designed to measure your child’s progress in meeting NH’s grade level expectations (GLEs) and recent alignment to the Common Core State Standards. The GLEs and Common Core Standards define knowledge and skills a student should have proficiency in by the end of each school year. The grade 4 test, for example, will measure what a student should know and be able to do after completing grade. 3 The reading and mathematics tests include multiple choice, short answer, and constructed response questions. The writing test includes multiple choice and constructed response questions, and a single extended writing prompt. A constructed response question requires students to show their work and/or explain their reasoning.
Test results will be available at the end of January 2014. Should you like more information on NECAP please visit NH’s Department of Education at the link below: http://www.education.nh.gov/instruction/assessment/necap/index.htm
Additionally, if you would like to review sample questions with your child, following is a link to the practice test items: http://www.education.nh.gov/instruction/assessment/necap/practice.htm
Please encourage your child to take the tests seriously and to give his or her best effort. You can also help your child prepare for the assessment by making sure that she or he is rested and has had a good breakfast before heading off to school. They will have their snack just prior to testing so please pack a healthy one. Thank you for supporting your child and our school during the testing period.

October’s Core Value: Community
This month we are discussing the Core Value of Community. Students are a part of many different communities such as their classroom, the school and the town they live in. Next week, we are going to come together as a school community against bullying. We will be discussing bullying at morning Gathering as well as in our classrooms. To show that we are taking a stand against bullying, we will be celebrating a Day of Unity on October 9th. On that day, please have your your child wear orange.
Polaris Star Students
Five students were individually recognized for going above and beyond as a member of their classroom community. Congratulations to: Ava Campbell, Julia Falco, Gus Ewald, Tazha Rashid and Tyler Varao!
A special classroom award was given to Ms. Verrill students. This week, we welcomed Nithin and Rithika to Polaris. Ms. Verrill noticed absolutely everyone doing their part to help them out, giving computer assistance, offering to be their buddy and showing them how to do centers throughout the day.
North Star Gift Bazaar
Saturday October 5th from 1:00-4:00 is our North Star Gift Bazaar. There will be vendors, art activities for the kids to make and take, fire trucks and ice-cream! This event is open to the public and we hope it will be a great fundraiser for our school playground! We hope to see you there!
Maglocks Have Arrived!
We are now able to unlock our exterior doors from the office. Simply ring the bell and when someone in the office pick up the phone, identify who you are. We will then unlock the door. You must come down stairs and check in at the office. A special thank you to our board member Jim Aguiar for all of your work with getting this done!
The first phase of our playground renovation is complete. We now have wood chips installed and the base of an old lamp pole has been removed!
